Used Schwinn 270 recumbents seem to be everywhere. That is both useful and a little depressing: they are substantial machines, but many end up idle when the original console or workout catalog no longer feels compelling.
I have converted two of them. My parents and my wife have all used the resulting machines, which makes this the build family I keep revisiting rather than a single finished artifact.
A platform worth repeating
The Schwinn supplies a comfortable seat, an adjustable frame, pedals, and a stable base. Those are the expensive physical parts of an exercise bike. The conversion asks whether the original resistance system really needs to remain the center of the machine.
An early version used a laser-cut chainring adapter, a single-speed chain, a sprocket, and the stock crank arms. It was mechanically direct and proved the concept. Later work moved toward a belt drive and purpose-built mounts designed with help from a collaborator. That cleaned up the temporary turnbuckles and workshop odds and ends that had done their job during exploration.
Gearing without a derailleur
The drivetrain can remain mechanically simple because gearing can happen in software. In Zwift I can use a compatible virtual-shifting control such as Zwift Click. Other training applications provide their own virtual gearing, and a trainer’s companion app can supply a manual resistance setting when needed.
Other applications take different angles: some can drive resistance from music, while others expose controls that behave more like a manual transmission. The point is not that every app behaves identically. It is that a FrankenTrainer does not need a conventional bicycle drivetrain to offer useful changes in effort.
Making the screen part of the machine
One of the Schwinns carries a monitor and Apple TV directly on the frame. That integration matters more than it may look. A machine is easier for the family to use when the controls and display are already where they belong, with no pre-ride assembly ritual.
The current machines remain working prototypes. The broad architecture is settled, but mounts, cable routing, guards, and controls are exactly the sort of details I expect to keep improving.
